City of Madeira Beach Seeks Public Input on John’s Pass Boardwalk Resiliency Improvements

The City of Madeira Beach invites residents, business owners, and community stakeholders to attend a public meeting regarding proposed resiliency improvements and repairs to the John’s Pass Boardwalk, a treasured public asset that serves both residents and visitors.

The meeting will be held:

Wednesday, October 7, 2026
2:00 p.m.
Madeira Beach City Hall
300 Municipal Drive
Madeira Beach, FL 33708

The meeting is being conducted as part of the City’s application for funding through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP). Public participation is a required component of the grant application process, and community feedback will help shape the final project scope.

The proposed project focuses on improving the structural integrity, safety, and long-term resiliency of the John’s Pass Boardwalk. Originally constructed in the 1970s, the boardwalk is supported by approximately 192 pilings and has been continuously exposed to the harsh marine environment for decades. The proposed improvements are intended to help extend the life of the facility while enhancing public safety and reducing future maintenance needs.

Proposed project elements include:

  • Wrapping remaining unprotected boardwalk pilings to provide additional protection from marine exposure and deterioration.
  • Repairing or replacing damaged or missing cross bracing and supporting hardware.
  • Replacing existing electrical lighting with resilient solar-powered lighting systems designed to better withstand storm impacts and water exposure.
  • Repairing handrails that have become separated or disconnected to improve safety and restore structural integrity.
  • Completing additional repairs identified through City inspections and engineering evaluations.

The City plans to seek up to $200,000 in FRDAP funding for the project. The FY 2027-2028 grant application period is currently open, and applications must be submitted to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection by October 15, 2026.

Community input gathered during the October 7 meeting will be included as part of the City’s grant application and will help demonstrate local support for preserving and strengthening this important waterfront amenity.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend, learn more about the proposed improvements, and share their feedback.
