HEALTH & WELLNESS: COVID Isn’t the Only Vaccine You Need

Article By Ryan Baker, MD

COVID ISN’T THE ONLY VACCINE YOU NEED

Without question, the COVID-19 vaccine is on the top of everyone’s minds right now. It’s becoming more and more available, and more people are becoming eligible for it. I’m optimistic about the COVID vaccine, and I recommend that every eligible person get vaccinated as soon as they can and from whatever reliable source they can. That being said, the COVID vaccine isn’t the only one you should talk to your primary care provider about, especially if you’re 65 or older.  Our immune systems weaken as we age, making us more vulnerable to infections, and vaccines help boost our immune systems.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends the following vaccinations for seniors:

  •    Influenza vaccine to protect against seasonal flu
  •    Pneumococcal vaccine for pneumonia
  •    Zoster vaccine to protect against shingles (recommended for adults 50 and older)

I’ve chosen to stand on a soapbox this year about the flu vaccine. It has been overshadowed by COVID, and it’s important not to skip it, especially this year. It’s also not too late in the season for the flu vaccine, which some studies have shown can lessen the symptoms of COVID.

The pneumococcal vaccine is already included as a part of your annual wellness visit, so that’s easy to check off the list. As for the shingles vaccine, it’s important to note that it cuts the risk of shingles in half for people who receive it at age 60 or older.

The CDC also recommends a tetanus shot, and I think this is especially relevant here in Florida, where we all run around without shoes on. And if you’re planning to travel out of the country, check with your doctor about which vaccines may be required or recommended. Once travel restrictions are loosened and we’re free to move about the world again, the CDC travel website wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/list is a really valuable tool if you’re planning international travel.

I believe vaccines are one of the most important medical discoveries of the past 100 years. Check in with your primary care provider about which vaccines are best for you, and remember that vaccines are a cornerstone of prevention, and prevention is the key to wellness.
