HEART HEALTH

According to the Florida Department of Health, heart disease is the leading cause of death for Floridians, accounting for approximately 2 out of 10 deaths in Florida. So, this February for American Heart Health month, we encourage our readers to show their hearts a little love by adding fresh fish and local strawberries to your table as well as enjoying our cooler weather with sunset walks and maybe a game of pickleball.

Regular Exercise

Physical activity is vital for maintaining heart health. Engaging in 30 minutes of activity five days per week can significantly reduce the risk of developing heart diseases. In Florida, February is a great month to get into a workout routine. With cooler temperatures, outdoor activities like walking, jogging, biking, and playing pickleball or tennis are easy free ways to get moving! Find trails you can explore at www.pinellas.gov/pinellas-county-trail-guide or check in at your local library to borrow a pickleball starters pack!

Healthy Diet

A balanced and nutritious diet plays a pivotal role in heart health. Incorporate a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats into your meals while limiting the consumption of processed foods,  saturated and trans fats, added sugars, and excessive salt. This month an easy and tasty addition to your diet for heart health is some Florida strawberries. Strawberries are rich in antioxidants, vitamins & fiber plus contain compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects. Strawberries are also shown to help regulate blood pressure & lower cholesterol levels. You can also add some locally caught fish to your table. Redfish, spotted seatrout, mangrove snapper and flounder are great in-season species to look for, when out fishing or at the local butcher.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

Excess weight and obesity are major risk factors for heart disease. To maintain a healthy weight, it is important to balance the calories consumed with physical activity. Portion control, eating mindfully, and avoiding sugary beverages can aid in weight management. Consulting a healthcare professional or registered dietitian can help develop a personalized weight management plan.

Manage Stress

Chronic stress can have a detrimental impact on heart health. It is important to develop healthy coping mechanisms such as regular exercise, deep breathing exercises, mindfulness, and engaging in activities that bring joy. Relaxing on our white sandy beaches, watching the sunset, or getting out to enjoy your weekend can all make a big impact on your heart health. Check out our events and arts & leisure listings for ways to get out and enjoy paradise this month.

Love Your Heart

Maintaining a healthy heart requires a commitment to making positive lifestyle changes like eating more locally caught fish, taking more time to be active outdoors, and relaxing in paradise. By incorporating regular exercise, a nutritious diet, stress management techniques, avoiding smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption, Floridians can significantly reduce their risk of heart diseases and promote overall cardiovascular wellness. Other ways to improve your heart health include regular checkups. Remember that small changes can make a big difference when it comes to heart health, so start your journey towards a healthier heart this February.
