SUMMER TRAVEL PLANNING

Smart Summer Travel: How AI Is   Changing the Way We Plan Vacations

As summer approaches and you begin mapping out your getaways, a new kind of travel assistant is quickly becoming a must-have: artificial intelligence (AI). From building detailed itineraries to finding the cheapest gas along your route, tools like ChatGPT and other AI-powered platforms are helping make summer travel easier, faster, and more affordable than ever.

While traveling with our Airstream across the country and into Canada, Rick and I discovered the power, precision, and speed that ChatGPT could plan our trips. By including specific travel perameters – daily driving distance, type of overnight amenities, and more – we were able to plan a one- month journey in a matter of hours verus days.

Gone are the days of juggling dozens of browser tabs. With AI tools, you can simply type in a request like, “Plan a 5-day beach trip from St. Petersburg, FL to Charleston, SC with a budget of $1,000,” and receive a customized itinerary in seconds. The more specific your input, the better to recieve your perfect trip the itinerary. Be sure to ask AI to include address, phone number and website of each destination and highlights along the way for later reference.

AI can asist you in travel planning by:

  • Suggesting destinations based on your interests and budget
  • Building day-by-day travel plans
  • Recommending restaurants, attractions, and hidden gems
  • Adjusting plans instantly if your schedule or weather changes

“It’s like having a personal travel agent available 24/7,” said one frequent traveler. “You can refine your trip as much as you want without starting from scratch,” said Rick Nummi.

The advantages go beyond convenience:

1. Personalization

AI tailors recommendations specifically to you – whether you prefer quiet beaches, family-friendly attractions, or nightlife.

2. Time Savings

What used to take hours of research can now be done in minutes.

3. Budget Optimization

AI can suggest cost-saving options like cheaper travel dates, alternative airports, or affordable accommodations.

4. Real-Time Flexibility

Plans can be updated instantly if conditions change – like weather delays or sold-out attractions.

5. All-in-One Planning

Instead of bouncing between apps, AI can help organize everything in one place – from packing lists to driving routes.

For road trippers, fuel costs can add up quickly – but AI can help here, too. By combining route planning with gas price tools, travelers can find the lowest fuel prices along the way. Here are some popular resources to pair with AI planning:

  • GasBuddy – Shows real-time gas prices and maps out the cheapest stations along your route
  • Waze – Offers live traffic updates and gas price comparisons
  • Google Maps – Displays nearby gas prices and integrates easily with trip routes
  • AAA Mobile App – Provides fuel prices, travel planning, and roadside assistance info

You can even ask AI something like: “Find the cheapest gas stops between St. Petersburg and Charleston using GasBuddy data,” and use that guidance alongside these apps.

As peak travel season kicks off from late May through June, experts say AI is especially helpful for avoiding common summer headaches – like crowded destinations, high prices, and last-minute planning stress.

Here are some top AI platforms for building the best-performing travel itineraries in 2026, based on recent reviews, testing, and feature comparisons:

  • ChatGPT (Best Overall Flexibility & Customization)
  • Layla AI (Best Dedicated Trip Planner)
  • Google Gemini (Best for Real-Time & Maps Integration)

Whether you’re staycationing in Florida, exploring national parks, or planning a quick weekend getaway, AI tools are making it easier to travel smarter, not harder.  And perhaps the biggest benefit? More time spent enjoying your trip – and less time planning it.

Enjoy the journey!
