ENCOURAGING WORDS

By Dennis Merritt Jones, DD

Being, On Purpose

“Our soul recognizes who we are. The amazing thing is that as you strive to consciously be who you have come here to be, life takes on a richer, deeper meaning and purpose than you ever dreamed possible.”

Have you ever pondered your purpose – why you, uniquely you, are here on planet earth now?

The quest to answer this query led me to write a book entitled, The Art of Being – 101 Ways To Practice Purpose In Your Life.

Discovering one’s purpose can be confusing because we each arrived here with no operator’s manual, no instructions, or map pointing us to our purpose.

It might simplify everything to know that it’s impossible NOT to be on purpose 24/7. Irrespective of whether we know it, regardless of where we are or what we are doing, we are always serving our purpose.

Your Purpose is Contained in the Life You Already Have

Many people think that their purpose only reveals itself in a pristine, peak, ah-ha moment of deep insight accompanied by the parting of skies, neon lights flashing, bells ringing, and a host of angelic voices singing THIS IS IT in perfect four-part harmony. Some of us think of our purpose as a point of arrival somewhere in the future – in a time that exists only in our dreams when life will finally be perfect, when all things come together and we feel that then, and only then, our life truly matters. Others believe the way to fulfill our purpose is to “do” something specific, something great, something transformational that affects our world in a major way. In part, these assumptions may be correct. However, it’s not so much about doing something special to fulfill our purpose; it’s about being something special; our own unique, individuated, one-of-a-kind self.

This may be more challenging to accomplish than what one might imagine because it requires mindfully merging our being with our doing – and always in the present moment.

When we are present and aware, we’ll see that our purpose for being on the planet always lies right before our eyes, tethering us to the present moment. It could be as simple as planting a garden, holding a door open for a stranger – or gently holding a newborn child. Suffice it to say, the gift of purpose we bring the planet is contained in the life we have now. What we are doing is secondary to the mindfulness with which we do it; this is how purpose reveals itself at the moment. The irony is every human being’s purpose is identical: it’s being the living spirit of God uniquely manifesting in the human condition. As we awaken to this purpose – and to the fact that we ALL have the same purpose – we may wonder how 8 billion human beings can express the same purpose in 8 billion unique ways.

The Paradox of Purpose: Multiplicity Without Duplicity

While every human being has the same purpose, how we choose to express it can and must be inherently different. God has no need for two of anything exactly the same. The Butcher, Baker, and Candlestick Maker each do life differently as they are born to – but it’s all the same Infinite Intelligence revealing Itself through its creation. The crux to living “on purpose” is found not only in being consciously aware of who you are, but more so why you are. Remember that the life you call your own belongs to the Beloved and always will – and contained within that life is the gift of purpose you bring to the planet in a way no one else can.

Celebrate and honor your purpose with clarity of intention, gratitude, love, and passion – that is why you have come.
