David Downing recently departed his $235,000 position heading Visit St. Pete/Clearwater after a very successful decade with the agency and over 4 years at the helm, amidst claims he stretched business trips into vacation using a county credit card on which he had charged over $300,000 in his tenure with the agency. His predecessor left over publicity surrounding a $1 million contract with a popular rapper. Downing’s suggestion that the Tourism Agency be privatized did not seem a popular solution.
