The Labels We Wear Define Us
By Dennis Merritt Jones, DD
“Others can give you a name or a number, but they can never tell you who you really are. That is something you yourself can discover from within.” –Thomas Merton
HAVE YOU EVER paused to consider how much of your life has been shaped by others? From the moment we are born, labels begin to accumulate. We are given a name and a set of numbers we did not choose, markers that identify us in official systems. As we grow – especially while we are young, open, and impressionable – we also inherit countless opinions about who we are, often without asking for them. This is simply part of becoming human in our culture. It isn’t good or bad; it’s just how things work.
Some labels, like names and identification numbers, are practical and permanent. But others – opinions, judgments, and assumptions – are far more flexible than we realize. These are the labels we can release the moment we recognize they no longer serve us. While we may not have had control over what entered our minds as children, we do have that power as adults. That realization can be profoundly freeing.
Many of us grew up carrying mistaken identities. Perhaps we were labeled “not enough”: not smart enough, not attractive enough, not talented enough, not successful enough – fill in the blank. Over time, those labels can feel like facts, even when they’re not. Yet the deeper truth is this: no one can define you without your consent. An opinion only has power if you agree to carry it. As we mature emotionally and spiritually, we gain the opportunity to redefine ourselves from the inside out. Awakening to who we truly are allows us to loosen the grip of external judgments. When we reconnect with our authentic identity, the only opinion that truly matters is our own.
So who are you beneath all the labels? Beyond roles, expectations, and comparisons, who are you really? At your core, you are a unique expression of universal intelligence – connected, whole, and complete. Recognizing your oneness with something greater means understanding this simple truth: you are enough right now, regardless of what anyone else thinks.
THE TAKEAWAY: Begin paying attention to how you label yourself today. Notice where your sense of worth may depend on the approval or praise of others. Do you need reassurance to feel confident or capable? Take a moment to look at yourself – literally, in the mirror. Meet your own eyes and recognize the remarkable being looking back at you. In that reflection lies the only opinion that truly matters.
That’s the way it is.
