Bonnie Traiman, The Heart of St. Pete Beach Library- Celebrating 24 Years of Dedication and a Lasting Legacy
By Peter Roos
For nearly a quarter of a century, Bonnie Traiman was a cornerstone of the St. Pete Beach Library. Her unwavering commitment, warmth, and vision made the library a welcoming haven for readers, learners, and community members of all ages. In recognition of her extraordinary service, the library’s community room now proudly bears her name – a fitting tribute to a remarkable individual who helped shape the heart of this cherished institution.
Bonnie first devoted a 30-year career to caring for New Jersey’s most vulnerable patients as a public health nurse, then began her career at the St. Pete Beach Library 24 years ago. Bonnie read more books in a year than most people do in a lifetime.
She cruised across France and floated through the sky on a hot air balloon with her writer husband of 62 years, Steve Traiman, a Paradise News contributor for over 20 years. She was a tough cookie with an indelible spirit. She always pushed for what she wanted and fought for the underdog. Throughout her tenure at the library, she wore many hats: librarian, mentor, advocate, and friend. Her deep passion for literacy and education transformed the library into an engaging space where everyone felt valued.
Bonnie was instrumental in initiating programs that reached out to children, adults, and seniors alike. From story hours and book clubs to technology workshops and author events, she helped ensure the library continually evolved to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community.
In December 2025, the St. Pete Beach Library took a meaningful step to honor Bonnie’s legacy by naming its community room after her. This space has always been a hub of activity – a place where ideas are exchanged, friendships are forged, and the spirit of community thrives. The Bonnie Traiman Community Room stands as a testament to her enduring influence. It will continue to host events, meetings, and gatherings that reflect the values Bonnie championed: inclusion, curiosity, and lifelong learning. The library used generous donations in her honor to rename the room and plant a Bismark silver palm and a resting bench outside in her honor.
Bonnie’s impact extends beyond the walls of the library. She was known throughout the city as the “library lady.” Within the library she was the “Mischief Manager.” Generations of families recall her kind guidance and helpful nature. Colleagues and patrons alike remember her smile, her encyclopedic knowledge of books, and her willingness to go above and beyond for anyone who walked through the doors.
Her leadership fostered a culture where every person felt welcome and respected. The programs she developed and the relationships she cultivated have left an indelible mark on St. Pete Beach, ensuring the library remains a vital and beloved institution.
As the community room takes on Bonnie Traiman’s name, her story will continue to inspire future generations. The honor is not just a recognition of her years of service, but a celebration of the values she brought to life every day.
The St. Pete Beach Library, its staff, and its patrons extend their heartfelt gratitude to Bonnie Traiman for 24 years of dedication. Her legacy lives on in the laughter of children at story hour, the thoughtful discussions at book club, and the sense of belonging that fills the Bonnie Traiman Community Room.
Bonnie Traiman’s story reminds us all of the power one person has to shape a community for the better. The newly named community room is a lasting tribute to her life’s work, ensuring she will always be a part of St. Pete Beach Library and the community she loved.
