SUMMARY:World Circus Day with Deb Carson at Eckerd College
DESCRIPTION:World Circus Day is April 3\, and @7p.m\, Deb Carson will present The FLO Show about one of Ringling’s most famous performers at Eckerd College’s Fox Hall. A Q&A\, book sale and signing following the multimedia presentation. The event is free and open to the public. Eckerd College  4200 54th Avenue South St. Petersburg\, Florida 33711 \nAuthor and Eckerd College alumni Deb Carson presents The FLO Show based on her book Becoming Flo- A Mostly True Story. With music\, interview clips\, personal anecdotes and 107 colorful projected images\, the talk brings to life the inspiring\, true story of Flo. Born Abraham Isadore Meyrowitz\, the 16-year old Orthodox Jewish boy fled home in 1920 from his abusive homophobic father\, joined a traveling circus\, and overcame anti-Semitism to become a famous Ringling clown who appeared in the center ring and on screen.  It was 40 years after her Uncle Albert’s death that Carson learned of Flo\, the woman who from childhood believed was his true self. Flo eventually came to live her life on her terms. This remarkable story spotlights the power of art\, courage and hope. For those who similarly struggle\, Flo’s story illuminates a way out. This emotionally charged historical look at the circus as a safe haven in an era where diversity and inclusiveness were not the norm will inspire anyone who aspires to a life well lived through art.

He shares his story from his humble immigrant beginnings to exhibiting at the Tampa Museum of Art in Skyway 20/21. Throughout his journey\, Samson encountered opportunities offering new and unexplored paths\, which appeals to him. Samson gives a delightful and inspiring talk weaving a collection of personal vignettes with images of his artworks\, illuminating his thought processes when creating art in his home studio or sketching on his travels. \nBIO \nMultimedia artist Samson Huang lives and work in the Tampa Bay area. A painter and a sculptor\, he uses a combination of oil paints\, watercolors\, ink\, organic & found materials along with digital tools as his preferred media of expression. \nSamson’s family immigrated to the lower eastside of Manhattan from Taiwan when he was 9 years old. The cultural shift honed his perceptions of his new life and the vast diversity of people in this new bustling environment. He gravitated to the arts\, where he could express his observations\, and thus began a lifelong love of painting and all forms of the creative arts. \nHis works have been exhibited nationally and are in private and public collections. Locally\, Samson’s artworks have received acclaim in Hillsborough County exhibiting at the Tampa Museum of Art in the Skyway 2020/21 show\, and was juried into the Gasparailla Festival of the Arts as an Emerging Artist 2022.
