january-2012-cover

Current Issue: The first issue of 2012 salutes the seas and the fragile sea life that has drawn visitors to our shores for generations.

We recognize and salute three aquatic institutions that provide a glimpse into the seas for residents and tourists alike.
All three are in fundraising mode for enthusiastic growth and relocation plans.

Also featured this month is the Jan. 31st municipal elections in St. Pete Beach, timed to coincide with the Republican primary elections.

Jan_-_Gopher_turtleGopher Tortoise
The Gopher tortoise is one of the oldest species on Earth, dating back to the Ice Age. Despite surviving the perils of geological time, the rate of decline for the species exceeded 30% over the past three decades due to harvesting of the species, which the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) prohibited in 1988 and the destruction of its burrows by plowing, bulldozing and paving. This drastic decline prompted FWC to list the gopher tortoise as threatened in 2007.

Gopher tortoises live in high and dry places that people want to use, such as sparsely treed longleaf pine and oak sand hills, pastures, prairies, roadsides, scrub and coastal grasslands and dunes. The cold-blooded tortoise digs to escape the hot sun, cold weather and predators. The tortoise doesn’t lay its first eggs resembling pingpong balls until it is 10 to 15 years old. Adults grow to be about a foot long, weigh up to 30 pounds and live 40 to 60 years in the wild.  Source: myfwc.com  http://www.tampabaywatch.org/
